about

Should we exhaust ourselves by striving to leave a legacy, or enjoy life instead? An oxymoronic song which may send us marching to the library! Recorded extemporaneously (one take and one track) before a fireplace in Reggello (Tuscany), 2 January 2023.

lyrics

If there are things to do, I’ll do them; however grudgingly, I’ll get them done.
When I find the time, I’ll even virtuously go for an invigorating walk in the sun.
I’ve seen a fair chunk of the planet; in retrospect I’m glad I did –
but I harbour a trait that I can’t eradicate, which I mostly, therefore, scrupulously hid:

I’m fundamentally lethargic. I’d like to sit and read all day,
as the rest of my dwindling time left on Earth irreversibly ebbs away.

Much that we relish in the moment is not the stuff of memory,
and we reminisce in later years about when we were off adventuring uncomfortably.
Should we be happy in the present – forgettable, content eukaryotes –
or exhaustingly strive to live consequential lives,
as if some cosmic auditor were taking notes? I’m fundamentally lethargic... etc.

We’re often warned about the perils of being physically unfit,
and it’s de rigueur to sprinkle smug opprobrium on those who bravely dare to boldly sit.
But, “gnothi s’auton”, said the ancients: this is a flaw I can’t repair,
though I’ve spent the bulk of my existence resisting the lure of the book and the chair.

I’m fundamentally lethargic: I’d like to sit and read all day,
as the dregs of my dwindling time left on Earth irreversibly drain away.
I’d like to sit and read all day (x6).
